AWD/Cholera Weekly Epidemiological Report EPI Week 30 (24 – 30 July) 2023

  • The Ministry of Health and Human Services reports that 235 new cases of cholera have been reported in Somalia since the beginning of the year and that 6,315 cases have been reported since the beginning of the year, 54% of which are children under 5 years.
  • There have been no reported deaths this week.
  • In response to the ongoing cholera outbreak, health and WASH cluster partners have implemented the activities in Kismayo, Gobweyn, and Luglow
  • A coordination meeting will be held in the coming days for Measles with all responsible parties. The measles treatment center will be reactivated soon.
  • MOH is requesting support for the medical supplies and for the incentives of the frontline team.
  • The health cluster has prepositioned essential cholera kits for drought-affected districts. The supplies are adequate to manage 1007 severe cases and 3321 moderate cases
  • Signals of Acute Watery Diarrhoea (AWD) reported by community health verification workers are investigated and validated by district-based rapid response teams.
  • Stool samples are routinely collected and sent to the laboratory for culture and sensitivity studies.
  • WASH cluster communicated with OCHA and CCCM to support newly arriving hygiene arrivals through other sectoral interventions such as food, shelter, and NFI.
